Green Fingers Fingerless Mittens

This was one of my first pattern designs and I still use these little mittens in winter quite often.

Green Fingers Fingerless Mitts Pattern

Green Fingers fingerless mittens

Needles: 3.5 mm or US size 4 circular needle or a set of 4 DPNs

Yarn: Quince and Co Finch (4 ply) – 1 skein (50g/202m) – to make to gloves I used 30g of one skein.

Gage: 6 sts and 10 rows per inch

Abbreviations:

CO – cast on

Cross 2 left – knit into the back of the second stitch on the needle, then knit into the back of the first stitch on the needle, then slip both stitches off the needle.

K2tog – knit two together

Yo – yarn over

PSSO – pass the slipped stitch over

Pm – place marker

Sl m – slip marker

M1R – make one right

M1l – make one left

Notes: these fingerless mittens should fit any female hand, but if you feel like you want to make it a little larger, I would suggest going for a DK yarn and larger needle, rather than changing the stitch count as it can only be done in multiple of 7 stitches if you want to preserve the broken rib pattern.

I would recommend using sharp tip needles to make it easier to knit through the back loop on Cross 2 left stitches.

Even though the lace pattern looks quite intricate (the lace pattern repeat is enclosed in “”), it is pretty easy to memorise and the back (palm) of the mitten is worked in stocking stitch, so the mittens work up pretty quickly.

Working YO on the 1st row only of the Fern pattern:

When you knit up to the central 2 purl stitches you will need to yarn over to create an extra stitch. To do that, instead of just pulling the yarn forward, wrap yarn over needle once, for it then to come back out at the front again ready to purl the next stitch and with a new stitch on the right hand needle.

After you’ve purled 2 central stitches, even though it says YO, technically, you don’t need to move the yarn anywhere, it will already be at the front, so you just need to knit the next stitch from the purl position to create a YO on the right hand needle.

Right Mitten:

  1. Hi Irina,

Thank you for making your patterns available for free. I’m looking forward to eventually making at least, some of them.

I’m hoping you can help me with something. Although I’ve been knitting for many years I still tend to confuse M1L and M1R and tend to not knit the patterns I have because of that. Can you tell me if there is a suitable alternative increase stitch that would work, even if it’s not the ideal alternative.

    Thanks very much.

    1. Hi Debbie,
Thank you for you kind words!
The way I remember it is M1R is the opposite to right . What I mean is the from is usually the right side but the opposite is the wrong side. So to M1R you pick up from the back and for M1L you pick yarn from the front. Does it make sense?
If you don’t mind a small hole (of course depends on what pattern you are knitting) , for example in shawls or raglan increases I find the easiest is a simple yarn over that you knit through the back loop on the subsequent round.

  2. Thanks Irina, for your tip on M1L and M1R. Somehow your email has gotten lost since I read it so I’m not sure of what that tip was anymore, unfortunately but I appreciate the idea to use a YO and just knit through the back on the wrong side row.
